What this date of birth calculator tells you

A date of birth calculator measures chronological age: the time that has passed between a birth date and a reference date. The headline answer is expressed as completed years, completed months and remaining days—not a rounded decimal estimate.

The result also includes total elapsed days and weeks, the weekday of birth and the next birthday countdown. Select a custom “age as on” date when a form or notification does not use today’s date. For a future milestone based on a chosen retirement age, use our retirement age calculator.

Important: Government exams, admissions and benefits normally use age on a stated cut-off date. Your age today may be different, so enter the official date exactly as printed in the notification.

How to calculate age from date of birth

  1. Enter the full DOBUse the day, month and year shown on the relevant official document.
  2. Choose the reference dateKeep today for current age, or select an application, admission, exam or retirement date.
  3. Calculate and verifyRead completed years, months and days. Confirm both input dates before using the result officially.

How the calculation works

The calculator first subtracts the birth year, month and day from the reference date. If the day difference is negative, it borrows the actual number of days from the preceding calendar month. If the month difference is then negative, it borrows one year. This calendar method preserves a meaningful years–months–days result across months of unequal length.

Worked example

DOB: 15 October 2000
Reference date: 1 September 2026

The 2026 birthday has not arrived, so the person is 25 years, 10 months and 17 days old—not 26.

Total days are calculated from the elapsed time between the two local calendar dates. Total months represent completed calendar months, so they should not be estimated by dividing total days by 30.

Common DOB calculation mistakes

Subtracting only the years

2026 − 2000 equals 26, but the completed age is still 25 if the birthday has not occurred by the reference date.

Using today instead of the cut-off

An exam may count age on 1 January or 1 August. Always use the date named in its official notice.

Treating every month as 30 days

Calendar months contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. Approximation can shift the remaining-day result.

Guessing an exact DOB from age

A completed age describes a date range. Many different birth dates produce the same age on the same day.

This tool provides a mathematical result, not a determination of legal eligibility. Rules about acceptable proof, age relaxation, leap-day birthdays and inclusive dates come from the relevant authority. For exam-specific cut-offs, continue with our exam age calculators.

Understanding the DOB finder

If a person is 25 completed years old on 1 September 2026, their DOB could fall anywhere from 2 September 2000 through 1 September 2001. One number—25—cannot distinguish between all dates in that interval.

Use the reverse calculator as a range finder only. For an exact birth date, consult the original record. In India, the document required for a particular purpose may be a birth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport or another record specified by the authority.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age from my date of birth?

Enter your birth date and choose today or another “age as on” date. The calculator counts complete calendar years first, then complete months, then the remaining days.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes. Choose any valid reference date on or after the date of birth. This is useful for application forms, school admission, retirement planning and exam cut-off dates.

Does this DOB calculator handle leap years?

Yes. It uses real Gregorian calendar dates, including February 29 and the actual number of days in every month.

What happens if someone was born on February 29?

The exact elapsed years, months and days are calculated from the real dates. For legal birthday treatment in a non-leap year, follow the rule used by the relevant authority because it may treat February 28 or March 1 as the anniversary.

Can I find a date of birth from age alone?

An age does not identify one exact birth date. The DOB finder shows the possible date range for anyone who has that completed age on a chosen date.

Is my date of birth stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. The date you enter is not sent to our server or saved in an account.

Which age should I enter on an official form?

Unless the form says otherwise, use completed chronological age on its specified reference or cut-off date. Always follow the issuing authority’s instructions.

Why can a simple birth-year subtraction be wrong?

Reference year minus birth year ignores whether the birthday has occurred. It can overstate age by one year and does not provide completed months or days.

Accuracy, privacy and limitations

Calculations use the proleptic Gregorian calendar and run locally in JavaScript. We do not ask for a name, account or document number. Results depend on correct inputs and should be checked against the instructions of the organisation receiving them.
